20-year-old Man United defensive target Caglar Soyuncu stars in Turkey victory

Turkey beat Moldova 3-1 at the Eskisehir Ataturk stadium on Monday 27 March in an international friendly.

Twenty-year-old Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu started for Turkey in what was one of the youngest sides head coach Fatih Terim has ever fielded with an average age of 23.

Soyuncu started at centre-back and despite his young age there were actually three younger players that started – Enes Unal, Emre Mor and Cengiz Under all aged 19.

Turkish-Football recently reported that Manchester United have been scouting Soyuncu.

Frieburg are however, reluctant to sell the powerful defender at the end of the season.

The young defender is a keen admirer of United boss Jose Mourinho.

“I admire Jose Mourinho, not just his football but his philosophy,” Soyuncu said.

“I would like to work with him in the future.”

The 20-year-old is also being targeted by Manchester City.

Soyuncu’s agent Mustafa Doğru was quoted as saying: “Manchester City have made contact to us through a third party.

“Caglar is the type of defender that suits Pep Guardiola’s style and his goal is to play Premier League football but he is focused on Freiburg until the end of the season.

“We will not discuss future plans until the end of the season.”

The young defender has already secured himself a first-team place for Freiburg this season making 20 appearances in the Bundesliga.

The Turkish international is a powerful player with good tackling ability but he is also confident on the ball and is also an impressive dribbler – he was actually a striker as a youth.

Caglar was one of two players in the Turkish national team yesterday who rose through the ranks of the Altinordu academy – the other being Under.

The Izmir based club have one of the most ambitious youth projects in Turkey and aim to build a first team based entirely of academy trained players.
