20-year-old Man United & Man City defensive target makes Bundesliga Team of the Season

Freiburg centre-back Caglar Soyuncu has made the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

The 20-year-old centre-back made the team of the season on the Das Erste German national television channel.

The Turkish international made a seamless transition from second-tier football at Altinordu to the Bundesliga this season.

Soyuncu joined Freiburg on a £2 million move and established himself as a first team player at his new club playing as a centre-back.

The rising star has attracted widespread interest from across Europe with both Manchester United and Manchester City keeping close tabs on his meteoric rise according to Turkish-Football.

Soyuncu was quoted as saying he admires current United boss Jose Mourinho.

“I admire Jose Mourinho, not just his football but his philosophy,” Soyuncu said.

“I would like to work with him in the future.”

Soyuncu’s agent Mustafa Doğru also confirmed City interest in the youngster: “Manchester City have made contact to us through a third party.

“Caglar is the type of defender that suits Pep Guardiola’s style and his goal is to play Premier League football but he is focused on Freiburg until the end of the season. 

“We will not discuss future plans until the end of the season.”

Villarreal, Roma and Lille have also been keeping tabs on the young centre-back.

The defender was one of the most hight rated youngsters at Altınordu before joining Freiburg.

Soyuncu joined Altınordu aged 10 and spent a brief period as a forward before establishing himself as a defender for the first-team.

The young defender has already established himself in the Turkish national team and has two caps for the Crescent-Stars.

The Izmir based side outfit have a unique project in Turkey which aims to create a team a side made up fully of players developed by the club.

Soyuncu started 24 games for Freiburg in his debut season for the Bundesliga outfit who surpassed expectations and finished in seventh position – just one place off a Europa League finish.
