The 37-year-old became the first Turkish referee in 40 years to feature at a World Cup finals since Doğan Babacan who was assigned to officiate the 1974 World Cup. The third best referee in the world – according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) – also became the first Turk to officiate a Champions League final last season.
