Besiktas manager Senol Gunes is widely regarded as one of the greatest manager in Turkish footballing history.

Gunes took Turkey to an unprecedented third place finish in the 2002 World Cup.

The experienced coach has guided Besiktas to back to back league championships and his side are currently first in the Champions League Group G. The first Turkish side to win their first three group stage games.

Gunes was asked whether he should be called the Turkish Alex Ferguson in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Besiktas boss praised Sir Alex, referring to him as a unique example to all managers.

“What made Alex Ferguson unique was being able to raise several generations and get them to play together. 

“He raised players from the club and managed to take them to the highest level. 

“He was a builder.

“Everyone can learn something from Alex Ferguson, he is a great example to us all,” Gunes said.

During his 26 years with United, Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two UEFA Champions League titles.

Gunes also has a reputation for developing and bringing the best out of players.

Besiktas are currently five points behind league leaders Galatasaray in the league and top of their Champions League group on 10 points after four games.
