Ilkay Gündoğan was substituted off the field after sustaining an injury during his side’s 1-1 friendly draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf, sparking concern over his health ahead of the Bundesliga restart.

The 24-year-old was ruled out out of first team football for over 400 days with injury but has since recovered and returned to first team football so Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp will be hoping it is not a serious setback.

The Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester United have been closely linked with a move for the Germany international.

Gündoğan’s contract expires in 2016 and Dortmund want to avoid losing Gündoğan on a free transfer.

The hard working midfielder was one of the central figures of the Dortmund side that reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in the 2012-13 season.

Gündoğan has scored on goal in 12 appearances for Dortmund this season.
