Arsenal make enquiry for €7m Liverpool target, Turkish giants also in race

Arsenal

Arsenal have made an enquiry for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu according to the Evening Standard.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is in desperate need of an additional defender following injuries to Per Mertesacker (knee), Gabriel Paulista (ankle) and Laurent Koscienly lacking match fitness going into the new season.

Mathieu is set to be pushed down the pecking order at Barcelona after a summer which has seen the La Liga champions bring in Samuel Umtiti from Lyon and Digne from Roma.

The Barca defender is unlikely to get much first-team action this season as a result of the recent defensive reinforcements.

The 32-year-old France international missed Euro 2016 through injury and has years of top-level domestic and European competition experience.

Besiktas are also in the race to sign Mathieu after recent signing Adriano recommended his former Barcelona team-mate to follow him to Turkey according to Fotomac.

Sport meanwhile recently reported that Liverpool are also considering a €7m move for the French defender.
