Arsenal set to offer Mesut Ozil new contract following Fenerbahce interest

Arsenal team news

Arsenal are planning to offer Mesut Özil a new contract deal according to the Mirror.

Özil is already the highest paid player in the current Arsenal team making around £140,000 per-week and his deal runs until 2018 however, the Gunners reportedly want to extend his contract before he enters the last two-years of the agreement.

The latest developments could explain Özil’s agent Dr Erküt Söğüt recently telling the Turkish press that a move to Fenerbahçe could be on the cards. Perhaps an attempt to strengthen his hand in the contract talks or maybe we are just being cynical.

“We will see what happens at the end of the season but if he were to leave Fenerbahçe would be an option,” Söğüt told Vatan newspaper.

“At the end of the day it is a huge club and I think Özil would say yes to an offer if it came down to it but it is way too early to start talking about transfers.”

This is not the first time Özil has been linked with a move to the Istanbul giants. Fenerbahçe made an enquiry for the 26-year-old over the summer transfer window which the 26-year-old thanked the club for.

“The offer from Fenerbahçe was an honour but I want to continue in England for now,” Özil told the Sabah newspaper.

Speaking to the Sabah newspaper Özil also confirmed that he has always been a Yellow Canaries fan to the Turkish newspaper.

“Everyone knows I am a Fenerbahçe fan,” he said.

The 26-year-old was born in Germany into a Turkish family and maintains close ties with Turkey but is reported to be happy in London.
