Mesut Özil could be available for selection earlier than expected after the World Cup winner returned to training ahead of schedule.

The German international was pictured heading to training on Friday alongside goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Damian Martinez.

Özil star was expected to be out of first team action until mid January.

However, if he can prove his fitness in training, Özil could be available for Arsenal’s busy run of games over the Christmas and New Year period.

Özil has not featured for the Gunner since damaging his knee ligaments during a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in October.

The Arsenal playmaker has made two assists and scored one goal in nine appearances for the Noth-London based club this season.

The 25-year-old became the first player of Turkish origin to win the World Cup when Germany lifted the trophy in Brazil last summer.
