Beşiktaş manager Slaven Bilic told Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren to keep his head held high following penalty miss.

The Black Eagles beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties in the Europa League Round of 32.

Beşiktaş scored all five penalties and the Reds had scored all of their spot kicks until Lovren’s miss.

“I went over and hugged him and told him to keep his head held high, I went to the changing room after the press conference but the Liverpool team had already left,” Bilic was quoted as saying on Eurosport Tr.

Lovren was first called up to Croatian national team in 2009 by manager Slaven Bilić against Belarus on 12 August.

The Liverpool defender has made 48 international appearances for Croatia since.

Bilic also called up Lovren for Euro 2012 but the 26-year-old defender had to withdraw because of injury.

Lovren joined Liverpool on a £20 million move from Southampton on a four-year deal in the summer.

Bilic took over as manager of Beşiktaş in 2013. The Black Eagles are currently second in the Süper Lig and in the Last 16 of the Europa League.
