Carragher – 'Emre Can looks like the first right back I've ever seen with a free role'

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can

Football pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admitted he was surprised with the role given to Emre Can following the goalless draw against Hull City.

The Liverpool youngster started at right-back but Carragher thought he looked like he had been given a free role.

Can’s strongest position has been shrouded in ambiguity this season. The 21-year-old joined  the Reds as a central midfielder but played most of the season in a defensive back-three and is now playing as a right-back in four man defence.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man believes his strongest position is in midfield but he may have to wait until next season to prove himself in the centre of the pitch.

The 21-year-old completed more passes (77) than any of his teammates, including midfielders Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and Philip Coutinho against Hull City and made the second highest passes in the entire Premier League – after Steven Gerrard – over the weekend.

The midfielder-come-defender received a rating of 6.76 rating from Whoscored for his performance against Hull.

Can has made 35 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season. Liverpool take on QPR this weekend.
