Carragher used the Twitter app Kicca to explain his views in detail: “My thoughts on Can at centre-back in a back three [are] that he gives control to the team on the ball and helps the team build from the back… But if the opposition dominate he’ll have to do more defending, and CB’s in a back 3 think if you had to put them in a 2 in a back 4 would you want Can there probably not but why? Because his main strength is not the defending its bringing the ball out which he’d do less in a back 4!!”

The former Liverpool defender also underlined that he believes Can is being played out of position.

“He found it really difficult and looked like a midfielder playing at the back. People say he’s been doing well recently in relation to bringing the ball out, but it was clumsy and a penalty, no doubt about it,”  Carragher said on Sky Sports.

The £9.75 million Liverpool signing was criticised for conceding a penalty during the 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Can has played as a defender since first being deployed in the Liverpool back-three in the second half half against Burnley on Boxing Day and has played the last seven games in defence.

The 21-year-old is a central midfielder but has experience playing in defensive roles.

Can was used as a full-back at Bayer Leverkusen from time to time despite being primarily used as a central midfielder.

The former Bayer midfielder has made 16 appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season.

Can was born in Germany but can represent either his country of birth of Turkey at international level due to being of Turkish heritage.
