Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt revealed that reaching the Champions League quarter-finals would be a dream come true.

The Bundesliga outfit beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League Last 16 first-leg at the BayArena.

“It was a first step and it would be a dream if we could reach the quarter-finals,” Schmidt told the official UEFA website.

Bayer still have a lot to do as they will face Atleti at the Vicente Calderon stadium in the second leg on 17 March.

The Rojiblancos reached the final of the Champions League last season and will be desperate to get past the Last 16.

The victory was Bayer’s first at this stage of the competition and the winning goal came courtesy of Turkish international Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

The 21-year-old has now scored nine times and provided seven assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit.

Bayer’s other Turkish international Ömer Toprak was suspended for the first-leg.
