Football pundit and former Liverpool goalkeeper David James stated that he could not understand why Reds boss has been playing Emre Can out of position following the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Can joined Liverpool as a central midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer but has played the majority of the season as a defender.

“Can has had a decent season but he has been played out of position, I can’t understand how you are going to play a player out of position rather than playing the decent ones out of position, it doesn’t make sense to me,” James told BT Sport 1.

The 21-year-old started in defence for Liverpool against Aston Villa and was given a Whoscored rating of 6.90.

Can has become a key member in Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers back-three this season.

The Reds missed out on the chance to reach their first FA Cup final since 2012.

The Liverpool youngster has one goal and one assist in 33 appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season.
