The former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has stated that he expected Emre Can to play in Liverpool’s midfield in the future.

The 21-year-old has been played as a defender for much of the season despite joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen as a central midfielder. Liverpool have only lost one Premier League game in which Can has started in defence this season.

”Long-term, I see Emre Can operating as a central midfielder,” Hamann told Liverpool FC’s official website.

“For now he’s doing a fine job where he is. Being versatile is a great asset in the early stages of your career.

”Some players aren’t comfortable with switching roles. It’s just not for them and they’ll tell the manager that. Others will go out and give it their best because they know it’s a chance to get in the starting XI.

”Any chance to play in the Liverpool team – even if it’s not your preferred position – has to be grabbed.”
