Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone admitted he was delighted with his sides 4-0 win over rivals Real Madrid in the Madrid derby.

The win was Atleti’s first at the Estadio Calderon in the 21st century.

“In a game like this we were able to play the game we wanted out on the pitch,” Simeone was quoted as saying by ESPN.

“And it went very well. Our ability to interpret the plan, and then execute it, was brilliant.”

Simeone also singled out Arda Turan, Griezman, Juanfran, Gabi and Tiago for praise.

“To attack down the right with Arda Turan, Griezmann and Juanfran, to defend well and use Gabi and Tiago to cover Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. It came out well,” he added.

Atleti scored twice inside 18 minutes thanks to Tiago and Saul Niguez.

Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic both scored in the second half to record a historic win over their rivals.

Turan completed 59 passes at an 88 percent accuracy. The Turkish international also completed the joint highest number of tackles (5) for his team and the highest number of successful dribbles in the game (4).

The 28-year-old achieved a Whoscored rating of 8.7.

Atletico Madrid reduced the gap with La Liga leaders Real to four points following the win.
