Emre Can cannot believe he got the chance to play alongside Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard

Liverpool youngster Emre Can revealed that he cannot believe he got the change to play alongside his childhood idol Steven Gerrard.

Can revealed that he grew up watching Gerrard and that it was surreal being able to call the former Reds captain a friend.

“The farewell was hard enough for everybody. The whole of Liverpool will miss something without Steven Gerrard,” Can told 11 Freunde.

“It is funny, my whole childhood I’ve been following Steven Gerrard’s career at Liverpool and then such a legend is standing next to you and talks to you like a normal person. He is a real quiet, down-to-earth guy and a role model for all of us.”

Gerrard spent 17 years playing for Liverpool but will play at another club for the first time in his career next season when he joins LA Galaxy.

The Liverpool legend won the FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup with the Reds.

Can hopes to replace Gerrard in central midfield but he was deployed primarily as a defender last season in Brendan Rodgers back-three and as a right-back.

The 21-year-old joined the Premier League giants from Bayer Leverkusen last season and made 40 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.
