Emre Can: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is 'like a big brother'

Emre Can has revealed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has had a positive influence on him since joining this summer.

The former Bayern Munich midfielder spoke to Liverpool FC’s official website about his time at the Merseyside club since joining this summer.

“He [Gerrard] told me it was a big game but it was my turn to shine,” Can said talking about a meeting he had with the captain before Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea.

“I see myself as a similar player to Steven but I don’t know if I’ll ever match all the success he has had. He has had a great career and is still playing very well.

“I like playing next to him, he helps me out and looks after me, like a big brother. I hear people say he is past his best but he is still very influential.

“I don’t think he keeps getting in the team because his name is Steven Gerrard. He gets picked because of his performances on the pitch.”

Can moved to Liverpool on a £9.75m deal from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
