Former Liverpool player and football pundit Jamie Carragher believes Emre Can looks better suited to playing in defence instead of midfield.

Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen as a central midfielder but has played predominantly as a defender in Brendan Rodgers back-three.

“I think he’s done really well,” Carragher told the official Liverpool website.

“Now and then he’s gone back into midfield, but he’s looked more suited to playing at the back now.”

Carragher revealed that Can has performed so well in defence that Rodgers may be tempted to keep him as a defender on a permanent basis.

“He was bought as a midfield player who has moved to the back, but the performances he is putting in, in that position, have you thinking ‘Keep him there’,” he added.

The 21-year-old has started the Reds last 10 games in defence. Can has one goal and one assist in 29 appearances in all competitions this season for Liverpool.

Liverpool have not lost a Premier League game in which Can has started in defence this season.

The Reds have won eight and drawn two league games in which Can has started in defence.
