Emre Can will ‘need years’ to achieve what Liverpool legend did

Liverpool team news Emre Can

Emre Can played down comparisons between himself and the Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard who departs for LA Galaxy this summer.

The Germany U21 international signed for Liverpool for €14 million in July 2014. Can has gone on to become a key member of Brendan Rodgers side.

Despite being signed as a midfielder, Can has spent the majority of his time in defence as part of a three-man defence.

“I think people understand it wrong. It would be presumptuous if I compared myself with Steven Gerrard.” Can told Kicker.

“He is a great player who achieved a lot. I’ll need years to do that.

“I have the biggest respect for his performances and awards for Liverpool [but] I want to go my way and be perceived as Emre Can.”

Emre Can is currently in the Czech Republic preparing for Germany U21’s semi final clash with Portugal U21.

The Liverpool star star made a total of 27 appearances for the Premier League outfit this season and also featured in the FA Cup and Europa League.
