Europa League TOTW: Mehmet Topal joins Liverpool star Coutinho in midfield

Fenerbahce star Mehmet Topal has been picked for the Europa League team of the week after his brilliant performance in the 1-0 victory over Braga yesterday.

Topal scored the winning goal on 83 minutes with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

The former Galatasaray and Valencia defensive midfield worked tirelessly making four interceptions, seven recoveries and won eight duals he was involved in.

Topal worked hard defensively but also helped his side keep possession with his 58 passes and also posed a threat going forwards.

The 30-year-old was also voted Europa League player of the week.

The Turkish international midfielder has now found the back of the net for the second Europa League running. Topal sealed progress to the Last 16 round against Lokomotiv Moscow with his goal in the last round.

Topal was joined by Liverpool star Coutinho, Athletic Bilbao’s Raul Garcia and Martin Frydek of Sparta Prague in the midfield for the team of the week.

Aubamayang and Reus who scored in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Tottenham were selected for the attacking tridente along with Anderlecht’s Frank Acheampong.

Manchester United goalkeeper De Gae was picked as goalkeeper despite conceding twice against Liverpool. The Spanish goalkeeper did make several key stops to prevent his side losing by a bigger margin.

The defence was comprised of Liverpool full-back Clyne, Victor Ruiz of Villarreal and Olexandr Kucher of Shakhtar.
