Former Arsenal player slams Mesut Ozil's performance against West Ham

The former England international and Arsenal midfielder Paul Mariner has slammed Mesut Özil’s performance against West Ham United.

The Gunners succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Hammers yesterday with goals coming from Cheikhou Kouyaté and Mauro Zárate.

Mariner put Arsenal’s performance partly down to the Gunners boss Arsene Wenger’s tactics and the 26-year-old World Cup winner.

“Özil who did absolutely nothing underneath Giroud,” Mariner stated when analysing the North London side’s performance on the ESPN FC television show.

The Germany international played the full 90 minutes in the Gunners disappointing home defeat.

Özil provided nine assists and five goals in 32 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions last season. The 26-year-old played a staring role during Arsenal’s pre-season and has been tipped as a candidate for player of the year by manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back next weekend when they have a tough away trip to Crystal Palace.
