Genoa sporting director Stefano Capozzucca has revealed that Goran Pandev was close to signing but the deal fell through due to the Macedonian international not having an EU passport.

“Goran Pandev was on the verge of signing for us,” Capozzucca said.

“He wanted to make the move as well but when we discovered that he does not have an EU passport we pulled out of the transfer.”

Pandev struggled for playing time under former manager Cesare Prandelli however, Hamza Hamzaoğlu has been keen to keep the Macedonian international at the club.

The 31-year-old joined Galatasaray from Napoli this summer on a one-year deal worth €2.4 million.
