Germany international consulted Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp before Man City move

Chelsea transfer news

The Germany international Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that he spoke with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp before making the move to Manchester City.

Gundogan said that Klopp urged him to make the move and wished him all the best.

“Of course I talked to Jurgen Klopp. We discussed a few things and I asked if I would fit in the Premier League and he said ‘definitely, definitely yes’. He wishes me the best and me also for him,” Ilkay Gundogan told the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s going to be a big fight next season in the whole Premier League – not just Manchester City and United – when you see which managers and players are joining. I think there will be more in the next weeks.”

Gundogan missed out on Euro 2016 this summer after suffering a knee injury during training. The same injury came close to costing him a move to the Premier League giants.

Gundogan initially joined Dortmund from Nuremberg in 2011 under the stewardship of Klopp and helped the Bundesliga giants reach the 2013 Champions League final. The 25-year-old provided seven assists and three goals in 40 appearances for Dortmund last season.
