Jack Wilshere has stated that he couldn’t believe it when Arsenal managed to sign Mesut Özil from Real Madrid.
The young midfielder said he was excited at the prospect of training an playing alongside the Germany international.
“I think we knew what sort of player Mesut was. His history as a player and the clubs he has played for … to bring him in to play with us was massive,” Wilshere told the club’s official website.
“I remember watching transfer deadline day and seeing that Arsenal were interested in Mesut Özil, and you almost didn’t believe it.”
Özil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day for a club record £42 million fee.
The Germany international is set to become Arsenal’s record earner according to the Italian website Tutto Mercato Web. The report states that Ozil is set to be rewarded with a new contract worth approximately £8.2million-a-year.
Özil played a key role in the north London based side reaching the Champions League Last 16 for the 15th consecutive season last week with a win over Olympiakos.
The Gunners take on Manchester City next Monday in a critical league encounter which could see Arsenal go top. Özil has won back-to-back FA Cups since joining Arsenal from Real Madrid.
