Klopp not surprised by Man Utd interest in Gundogan

Borussia Dortmund star İlkay Gündoğan

Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that the interest being shown in İlkay Gündoğan does not surprise him.

Manchester United have been closely linked with Gündoğan recently and are expected to make a summer bid.

Klopp did however, state that Gündoğan remains fully focused on ensuring Dortmund finish the league in a strong position.

“It’s normal that players are linked with other clubs, especially here,” Klopp was quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

“But it does not interrupt our focus on the game.”

The 24-year-old’s contract comes to an end in 2016 and Dortmund have offered a contract extension until 2019 worth €19.5 million over three seasons.

Gündoğan has however, been unwilling to strike a deal with the Bundesliga giants.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed that they will consider offers if Gündoğan fails to extend his contract with the club.

Watzke responded to questions asking whether Gündoğan would be joining United by saying that it all depends on the contract talks.

“If Ilkay tells us he doesn’t want to extend, then we’ll sit down and discuss it. But that hasn’t happened yet,” Watzke told Sky Deutschland on Saturday.

The Germany international of Turkish origin missed a large part of the season due to injury but has since recovered and returned to first team football.
