Liverpool needed just a draw to progress and had the Reds scored Beşiktaş would have needed three goals to make it to the next stage.

Beşiktaş scored the only goal in regulation time at the Atatürk Olmypic. Tolgay Arslan hit the back of the net with a stunning strike on 71 minutes to take the game into extra time.

The score remained tied 1-1 on aggregate in extra-time to take the tie into penalties. After nine successful spot kicks, Dejan Lovren stepped up and blazed the ball over the goal.
