Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has responded well to missing his spot-kick in the penalty shoot out against Beşiktaş in the Europa League Round of 32 according to teammate Martin Skrtel.

“He’s the one who missed, but that’s football and that’s life. He responded well and played really well on Sunday, helping the team to get three points,” Skrtel told the official Liverpool website.

“I was glad for him because he’s a nice guy. I talk to him a lot, he’s my neighbour and I’m glad he’s getting to the form that he was in at Southampton.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers kept faith in Lovren following the penalty miss and started the Croatian international against Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League.

The Reds beat City 2-1 at Anfield to close in on the top four.

Liverpool take on Burnley at Anfield next week in the Premier League and Lovren is expected to feature again.

Rodgers side finished last season as Premier League runners up and will be determined to finish in the top four after being knocked out of the Europa League.

Liverpool would have been able to secure a Champions League spot by winning the Europa League but will now have to finish the league in the top four to guarantee a place in the elite European football competition
