Liverpool join race for €7m Barcelona defender

Liverpool have entered the race for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu according to Sport.

The report claims that the French defender is on the radar of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp as he continues efforts to strengthen his defensive options.

Liverpool decided not to renew Kolo Toure’s contract and Martin Skrtel joined Fenerbahce last week. To make matters worse Joe Gomez is injured. The Reds currently have just two fit centre backs in Lovren and Matip.

Sport do however, report that Liverpool could face competing from Super Lig champions Besiktas who have made a €7 million bid for the defender.

Barcelona have strengthened defensively signing Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne which does suggest that the La Liga champions may to open to offers for Mathieu who is expected to fall down the pecking order.

Besiktas would be able to offer Mathieu first team and Champions League football if he were to join the club next season.

The Black Eagles have made strengthening the defence a priority. Besiktas conceded the most goals in the top three last season want to make changes to their back line with Champions League football around the corner.
