Liverpool legend questions whether Emre Can can compete against ‘top-class players’ [divider]
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher criticised Emre Can following the Reds 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.
Sky Sports football pundit Carragher also questioned whether Can can cut it against the best players in the Premier League.
“He played really well in the last five or six games bringing the ball out,” he said on Sky Sports.
“But against top-class players he’s been found wanting. He got beaten too easily and tried to rectify it and made two mistakes.”
Can played on the right side of a three man defence alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.
The 21-year-old was first deployed as a defender in the second half during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Burnley in the Premier League and has played the last seven games in a defensive role.
Can conceded a penalty which resulted in Chelsea’s only goal of the game.
However, the 21-year-old was the third highest rated defender in the match, making six successful tackles, one interceptions and two clearances according to Whoscored.com.
Can arrived in Liverpool as a central midfielder and Carragher did highlight that the former Bayer Leverkusen star was being played out of position.
“He found it really difficult and looked like a midfielder playing at the back. People say he’s been doing well recently in relation to bringing the ball out, but it was clumsy and a penalty, no doubt about it,” he added.
The 21-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Reds this season.
