Lucas stakes claim for Liverpool starting place in Emre Can's absence

Emre Can, Liverpool

Liverpool recored a 4-0 win over their city rivals Everton yesterday evening in Emre Can’s absence.

The 22-year-old was ruled out after he sustained an ankle injury during the Red’s 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opted to deploy the Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva in Can’s place.

Lucas was one of Liverpool’s highest performers and received a rating of 9.1 from WhoScored.

Can has been ruled out for at least a month meaning he may end up missing the rest of the season. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is now unable to call upon Can or his club captain Jordan Henderson.

The Germany international has since established himself as a first team regular in the Liverpool midfield and there have been calls for him to become the next captain of the club.

Liverpool take on relegation battlers Newcastle United this weekend in the Premier League.
