Man City crush Real Madrid but £20m star still yet to play first game of 2017

Manchester City crushed Real Madrid 4-1 in the International Championship Cup in Los Angeles in the early hours of Thursday.

All five goals were scored in the second half with Otamendi opening the scoring for City on 52 minutes.

Raheem Sterling doubled City’s lead seven minutes later, Stones and Diaz added to the tally before Oscar scored a last gasp consolation goal for Real.

Despite recovering from his knee injury Ilkay Gundogan did not get to feature against Real.

The midfielder of Turkish origin had hoped to get some playing time under his belt against United and Real but was not used in either pre-season game.

Gundogan has not played a competitive game since December due to injury.

The 26-year-old has however, made a full recovery and returned to team training.

City signed Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund for £20 million [BBC] last summer but injuries blighted his season.

The midfielder is expected to be ready for first team action ahead of the the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
