Man City team news: Star man expected to miss Crystal Palace game but could return for Chelsea clash

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan made his first start after 10 months on the sidelines with a knee injury during the League Cup mid-week.

City beat West Brom 2-1 but Gundogan was unable to complete the full 90 minutes after being forced off with an ankle injury after a tackle from behind by Claudio Yacob.

A report on the club’s website read: “It is too early at this stage to give an exact time-frame on his absence but he is expected to be back on the training field in the coming days.”

The player himself tweeted: “Hi all, thank you for all your messages! I’m happy to tell you my injury is nothing serious and I hope to be back soon on the pitch!”

The Evening Standard claim that Gundogan is likely to miss the weekend game against Crystal Palace and the Champions League match with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The midfielder of Turkish origin is however, expected to return in time for City’s clash against Premier League champions Chelsea on 30 September.

“I think it’s not serious, it’s not eight months, but a little injury,” Guardiola said after the West Brom game. “Unfortunately the action is tough. He will be back soon, hopefully.”

Meanwhile, City captain Vincent Kompany could feature and will be assessed ahead of time.
