Former Arsenal player Robert Pires has revealed that Mesut Özil loves the club and that he would do anything to please the fans.
“He loves this club and cares a lot about it. He wants to win trophies here and wants to make the fans happy, like he did against Liverpool. First, there was his wonderful pass for Aaron on the first goal. Then he scored that wonderful free-kick for the second goal,” Pires told the official Arsenal website.
The World Cup winner scored in the Gunners 4-1 win against Liverpool on the weekend and was involved in the setup for Héctor Bellerín’s goal.
Özil has come under fire from sections of the British media and fans but a number of high profile pundits have recently started praising the 26-year-old.
Former Liverpool player and football pundit Jamie Redknapp also praised Arsenal star Mesut Özil following his performance in the 4-1 win over the Reds.
“There’s no doubt that Mesut Ozil is an easy target for ex-pros and pundits. But when he’s at his best he is worth paying to watch,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
The 26-year-old has received a rating of 8.68 for his performance against Liverpool by Whoscored.
The World Cup winner was selected as the best performing attacking midfielder in Europe in 2015 according to the CIES Football Observatory’s latest performance rankings.
Özil has five goals and seven assists in all competitions for Arsenal this season.
