On-loan Chelsea defender to miss AFCON 2017 clash for Nigeria

Kenneth Omeruo

Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omeruo has been ruled out of 2017 African Cup of Nations clash against Nigeria after suffering a groin injury.

Nigerian team administrator Dayo Enebi told NFF.com that the injury will prevent Omeruo from playing in both games against Egypt next week: “Omeruo’s injury and subsequent withdrawal from the Egypt games has been communicated to the coaches and the medics.

“The player is disappointed with his injury setback because he has been looking forward to this game with a lot of optimism. Expectedly, the coaches were also unhappy but they have wished him a quick recovery.”

Egypt are currently first in the AFCON 2017 qualification group with six points after two games in Group G.

Nigeria welcome Egypt on March 25 and the return leg will be played in Egypt just three days later.

Omeruo also missed the Turkish Super League clash between Bursaspor and Kasimpasa today.

The presence of the defender was missed today as Kasimpasa suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Green Crocodiles.

Omeruo joined the Istanbul minnows on-loan over the summer transfer window from Chelsea and has established himself as a key player in one of the best defensive sides in the league.
