Mesut Özil has thanked Arsenal fans for unveiling a German themed banner at the Emirates stadium.

Özil tweeted: “Can’t believe you really put this up at the Emirates!!! You’re amazing!! Thank you! #MiaSanArsenal #Gooners #AFC “

The fans draped a banner reading, ‘mia san Arsenal’ over the side of one of the stands at the Emirates with two German flags either side.

Özil became the first player of Turkish origin to win the World Cup with the German national team this summer.

Arsenal have three German international players, Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Özil.

The 26-year-old returned to first team football on the weekend after spending two months out injured.

Özil played the last 20 minutes in the 3-0 win against Stoke City in the Premier League.

Arsenal moved into fifth place on 36 points following the victory.
