Middlesbrough coach Aitor Karanka hopes that Arsenal rest Mesut Özil on Sunday in the FA Cup 5th Round game.
“Mesut is a very good lad, I spent three seasons working with him in Madrid. He’s an amazing player and I hope he’s not on top form on Sunday,” Karanka told the Express.
“Maybe he’s coming into form at the wrong time for us, but perhaps he can be rested for them, because Arsenal have got some big games coming up.”
Karanka coached Özil while working as Jose Mourinho’s assistant manager at Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old had 81 assists in all competitions for the Spanish giants. In total Özil has 157 assists, 69 goals in 399 games.
Özil won the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey while at Real Madrid.
The World Cup winner has also lifted the FA Cup with Arsenal following his record breaking £42.5 million move to the North London based club.
Arsenal will progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a win against Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Özil has scored three times and created two assists in his last four games in all competitions for Arsenal.
