Paul Scholes reveals only one team that can stop Man United winning the Europa League
Paul Scholes has revealed that he believes only one team can stop Manchester United winning the Europa League.
Besiktas fans may be disappointed to find out that he did not mention the reigning Turkish league champions as posing United much of a threat.
Instead for former United legend stated that he feels Lyon could rival the Red Devils in the race for the European trophy.
“It is a great chance for them,” Scholes told Omnisport.
“They are obviously the biggest club left in the competition. They are favourites and rightly so.
“If they perform anything like [they can] they have got a great chance of winning.
“I think Lyon are maybe the obvious contenders to United. But, apart from that, I don’t see too many problems for them in that competition.”
The Manchester based side have never won the Europa League in its current format and considering they are currently in 5th place
United could end up facing Lyon in the semi-finals but both sides will have to progress past their quarter-final opponents.
Lyon will face Istanbul giants Besiktas while United take on Anderlecht.
Besiktas are currently first in the Turkish league and favourites to defend the title. The Black Eagles have not lost a European game at their new Vodafone Arena stadium.
The Eagles have scored 10 goals in the last two Europa League rounds, five past Hapoel Beer-Sheva and five past Olympiakos.
Besiktas are almost certain to book a place in the Champions League next season but winning the Europa League trophy may end up being the only path for United to enter the competition.
United are currently 5th in the Premier League and must finish in top four to qualify for Champions League football unless of course they win the Europa League.
