United keeper Romero made the team. Were it not for his last minute save to prevent Krasnador finding an equaliser the tie would have spilled over into extra time.

Valencia and the goalscorer who secured United a place in the next round, Juan Mata also the team.

For Besiktas it was Ricardo Quaresma and the star of the night Ryan Babel who were selected.

Babel scored his first Europa League goal in six years, in fact his first since leaving Liverpool.

The Dutch winger then scored another at a vital stage of the game for Besiktas to make the score 3-1.

Besiktas were down to 10 men and hanging on against an Olympiakos side that needed just one more goal to qualify.

Babel’s goal put Besiktas back in the driving seat and Cenk Tosun scored soon after to wrap up a memorable victory.

Besiktas will take on Lyon in the next round. Not a single player from the Ligue 1 side made the team.

United meanwhile face Anderlecht in the quarter-finals.
