Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil started in the Germany national team victory over Poland in the Group D Euro 2016 qualification game in Frankfurt today.
Özil took to social media shortly after the 3-1 win and shared a picture on his Instagram account alongside several teammates including Liverpool youngster Emre Can who made his debut today.
Can started at right-back. A position Liverpool fans will not have the fondest memories of the 21-year-old playing in following a poor performance in the 6-1 defeat against Stoke City at the end of last season.
Özil and Can were both born in Germany but could have represented Turkey at senior international level due to being ethnic Turks.
There are also several players in the Turkish national side including Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Beşiktaş winger Gökhan Töre and former Bayern Munich midfielder Hamit Altıntop who were all born in Germany but represent the Crescent-Stars.
Germany has the largest Turkish population in Europe estimated between 3-4 million.
