Ray Wilkins reveals why Chelsea star is more likely to join Man United than Ozil

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has been closely linked with a move to Manchester United this season.

Ozil has under 12 months remaining on his contract but has yet to strike a new deal.

The playmaker of Turkish origin will leave the Gunners as a free agent if a new agreement is not reached.

Former Manchester United player Ray Wilkins does not however, believe that Ozil will join United.

Wilkins believes Ozil is not a Jose Mourinho type of player.

Ozil does not have the ‘work ethic’ that the Portugeuse manager demands from players according to the football pundit.

In fact he feels that Chelsea midfielder Willian has more of a chance to join the Red Devils.

“Mesut Ozil won’t go to Old Trafford because he doesn’t have the work ethic that Mourinho looks for in his players,” Wilkins told Sportingbet. “I actually see Willian as being the likely player to head to Old Trafford. Jose is an enormous admirer of Willian and he would be a special signing for United, but I pray that Chelsea don’t let him go.”

Wilkins thinks that Ozil should return to Germany as it would suit his style more.

“Ozil needs to go back to Germany, enjoy his football again and get around the pitch as he likes doing. In the Premier League, you’re expected to work hard defensively for your team, and I don’t think Mesut does that enough. Against Spurs, he was excellent in doing that, tracking Christian Eriksen, but he needs to do that every game, it can’t be one game in 20,” he added.

Wilkins seems to have forget that Ozil was very much a Mourinho player at Real Madrid.

In fact Ozil enjoyed one of his most successful stints while playing under the stewardship of Mourinho at the La Liga giants.

The 29-year-old won the La Liga title during his time in Spain.

The playmaker setup 81 goals and scored 27 goals during his time at the Madrid based giants.
