Revealed: Liverpool could draw surprise Turkish title challengers in Champions League

Turkish league minnows Basaksehir qualified for the Champions League playoff draw for the first time in club history.

The Istanbul minnows knocked Club Brugge out of the qualifiers, 5-3 on aggregate.

The Turkish league runners-up will be among the unseeded teams meaning they could end up facing Premier League giants Liverpool at the play-off stage.

Basaksehir feature two players that will be quite familiar to Liverpool fans.

Former Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor joined the Istanbul based side in January.

The experienced striker scored seven times and provided one assist in 15 games last season.

The Togo international already has a goal and an assist this Champions League campaign.

Gael Clichy meanwhile spent most of his career in the Premier League playing for Arsenal and Manchester City before his move to Basaksehir this summer.

Basaksehir pushed Besiktas to the wire in the title race and narrowly missed out on lifting the Turkish Cup after losing to Konyaspor in the final.

The club operate on a shoestring budget and are coached by former Turkish national team manager Abdullah Avci who has a reputation as being a giant killer.

Basaksehir managed to beat all three of their major Istanbul rivals, Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahce last season.
