Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has urged his teammates to forget about the Europa League exit.

The Reds won the first-leg against Beşiktaş in the Round of 32 1-0 but failed to keep a clean sheet in Istanbul. The Black Eagles scored at the Atatürk Olympic stadium to take the game into extra time and penalties.

Beşiktaş won the penalty shoot out 5-4 with Dejan Lovren missing the only spot kick of the evening.

Skrtel underlined that Liverpool must now be fully focused on the Manchester City game on the weekend.

“We’re disappointed now, but I think we have to forget about this quickly because in two days’ time we have a big game and we have to be focused on that one,” Skrtel told Liverpoolfc.com.

Skrtel also revealed that he thought Liverpool defended well against Beşiktaş and that they caused the home side problems on the counter attack.

“We came here and we wanted to get through to the next round. We’d been defending well and we tried to go for the counter-attack and score some goals, but unfortunately we couldn’t. We conceded one goal,” he added.

Liverpool had kept a clean sheet in their last five games going into the second leg against Beşiktaş.

Beşiktaş will now take on Club Brugge in the Last 16 of the tournament in March.
