Liverpool star almost picked Turkey says Trabzonspor boss

The former Turkey national team manager Ersun Yanal has revealed that he attempted to persuade Emre Can to play for the Crescent and Stars.

The experinced manager told HaberTurk that spoke with the Liverpool midfielder’s father and asked whether Can wanted to play for Turkey.

Can’s father thanked Yanal for the visit but stated that it was ultimately up to his son and that it was Germany which helped develop Can and gave him all the opportunities.

The Liverpool star made one appearance for Germany during Euro 2016. The 22-year-old was included in the starting line-up which took on the hosts France in the semi finals.

The Germany international of Turkish origin did not however, bring his side good luck. Coincidently the Germany national team lost their first game of the campaign in the only game Can started.

Can was one of eight Germany born ethnic Turks in the tournament over the summer. Mesut Ozil was the other Germany international of Turkish origin while Turkey had six Germany born players.
