Newcastle transfer news

Trabzonspor have begun talks with Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote according to the Turkish Süper Lig broadcaster LigTV.

The Black Sea Storm are on the lookout for a defensive midfielder after failing to agree terms with the former QPR player Stephen Mbia.

Talks broke down between Trabzonspor and Mbia at the last hurdle and the Cameroon international left Trabzonspor without signing a deal.

LigTV goes onto state that the Black Sea based side have met with Tiote’s agent and will contact the club if talks progress.

Tiote has two years remaining on his contract with Newcastle United. The 29-year-old made just 12 appearances for his side this season due to injuries.

The combative midfielder has made 55 appearances for the Ivory Coast national team. Tiote has also previously played for FC Twente, Anderlecht and Roda.

Trabzonspor finished last season in fifth place but are expected to invest heavily and mount a title challenge next season.
