“We are still in talks” – Liverpool boss Klopp reveals update on contract talks with in-demand star midfielder

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is unsure about Emre Can’s long-term future at the club.

The Germany international’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season. Serie A giants Juventus have been closely linked with the 23-year-old in recent weeks.

Klopp stated that the current situation is ‘not cool’ but confirmed that talks with the former Bayer Leverkusen man are still ongoing.

The German tactician remains confident that Can will put pen-to-paper on a new deal. Klopp went onto state that the Germany international will not be leaving Liverpool under any circumstances this summer.

“So far there is no signing and that is the situation,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

“We are still in talks. Do I think it is too cool that we didn’t fix it so far? No, to be honest. But it is all okay at the moment and we have to take it like this.

“His mind is not elsewhere. It is an important contract for him at his age. I am 100% sure that we don’t sell the player now in this situation. Not a player from the first team line-up for sure.

“He will play here for the next year that is for sure. All the rest we have to see.”

Liverpool could lose Can on a free-transfer next summer if they are unable to agree on a new contract. The 23-year-old has cemented his place in Klopp’s starting line-up over the past 12-months.

Can played the full 90 minutes during Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Watford on Saturday.

Liverpool take on Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in the UEFA Champions League qualification round tonight.
