Arsene Wenger has announced he will be stepping down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season.

The French manager will stand down after serving the North London based side for 22 years.

Mesut Ozil recently extended his deal with Arsenal by signing a new contract deal in February.

Wenger signed Ozil from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club record fee of £42.5 million.

The playmaker of Turkish origin was full of praise for Wenger after hearing the news that the head coach would be parting ways with the club.

The 2014 World Cup winner described playing under the stewardship of Wenger a privilege.

Ozil told beIN Sports: “Anyone who played for him knows his qualities.

“We are proud to have had the privilege to work with him and under his guidance.”

The 29-year-old won three FA Cup titles under the management of Wenger and could add the Europa League to his trophy cabinet this season.

Wenger is on course to lifting the European competition title but will have to navigate his side past a tricky semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid first.

Winning the Europa League would secure the Gunners a place in the Champions League next season.
