Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 1-1 draw against Schalke at the Veltins-Arena stadium but the main talking point after the game was a potentially racially motivated incident involving Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

Schalke fans threw a pork sandwich at Çalhanoğlu according to Spanish sports newspaper Marca.

Çalhanoğlu is of course an ethnic Turk born in Germany and a muslim for whom eating pig meat is prohibited by Islamic dietary laws.

The Turkish international responded to being pelted with food by picking it up, blessing it and placed it outside the pitch.

The pork was inside bread and in Turkish culture if bread is found on the floor it is customary to pick it up and place it on high ground so that it is not trodden on.

Bread is respected in Turkish culture as it is a staple food in most peoples diet. The custom of not leaving bread on the floor is to honour those who cannot afford bread.

The 21-year-old has impressed since joining Bayer on a €14.5 million move from HSV and has attracted interest from England.
