Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has stated that he is proud to be compared to the club legend Steven Gerrard.
Can played a season alongside Gerrard before the 35-year-old joined the MLS side LA Galaxy.
“It just makes me proud to be compared to someone like Steven Gerrard,” Can told FIFA.com.
“I’m trying to go my own way. Obviously it’d be great if I also could become as big a player as Gerrard.”
Can is currently out injured but is aiming to return to full fitness ahead of the Europa League final, should the Red’s come through their two-legged semi-final tie against Villarreal.
The 22-year-old is recovering ahead of schedule according to the Liverpool Echo. Can was initially expected to be out for six weeks which would have ruled him out for the rest of the season.
Liverpool take on the Spanish outfit Villarreal in the Europa League semi finals second leg on Thursday.
