‘You’ll never walk along’ is of course a popular Liverpool chant but Can used it in reference for the Germany national team.

The 22-year-old is one of two players of Turkish origin in the 23-man Germany squad that was selected for Euro 2016 in France this summer – the other being Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.

Can had the option to represent Turkey and Germany at international level as did Ozil. Likewise eight players in the current Turkish national team could have played for Germany – their country of birth.

Several star players of the Turkish national side such as Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu, Mainz 05 midfielder Yunus Malli and Dortmund’s Nuri Sahin were born in Germany.
