“Turkish referees have not officiated at this level in many years so it was a great responsibility and honour to represent the country on the world stage,” Çakır told Eurosport Turkey.
“There was a two year selection process, referees from 52 countries applied so it was a great achievement to take charge of three games including the semi-finals.”
The 37-year-old is the most experienced Turkish referee at International and European level.
